Job / Work / Career

Last night, on MSN, many things are going on. Amanda is desperated for job, it's her first day in new company and she doesn't feel right. Therefore, she won't go to work in this company who won't provide any insurance until she passes provision. That is illegal but some companies do it. She has been on job hunting for months. In our heart, we still love to work in hospitality. But the work environment condition is so poor, we couldn't hold on, even our passion burns out.
We do miss old time a lot. We work together for 3 yrs. It was great and team was perfect match. Each one of Front desk team members could do check-in / -out, information desk, tour reservation, conciage, secretury, flight arrangement, operator...etc. During 2 yrs in FO, most of time, we work alone. There was only ONE receptionist to host 80+ in-house guests and each shift was 9 hrs long on paper. Our aim was 5 minutes per guest and all guest leaves FO with happy smile or laugh even better. High repeat guest rate told us we made it. From guest's view, we were not only FO team but also friends. They like to come back and stay with us coz we provide friendship. It's not like a hotel they stay in anywhere everywhere. It's not one of those international hotel chains. It's not a cleaness quiet room only. Our FO team did try to make this hotel standing out. But poor HRM and no space for internal training cold our feet. We couldn't see our future. Time to break up, search for our own sky! Sad!
So, after a long talk, I suggest her to take a week off and find out what she want from next job. Is it just to be a normal job to herself or to her family? Can she be happy with this job? Can she fit in new team / company culture? Can she see herself working in this company in future? Amanda is a strong girl and efficient. I like her attitude. She gives herself lots of pressure and high expectation to others. Of course, she gets high standard on herself too. When I start to work with her, wow, she's like the housekeeping supervisor with white gloves on and carring a stopwatch. But later on, once you find the tempo, it's great. We have the same issue on being efficient, we love to work in hospitality, we like to work in front line. Back to the problem, work condition is bad, we can't continue unless hotel changes which is impossible.
Anyhow, we do hope Amanda can find her way and build her castle. Also, I do dream to work one day in hospitality again.
